C1 Vocabulary Activities for CAE

C1 Vocabulary Activities for CAE

In this C1 Vocabulary Activities workshop, students will discuss C1 level words and their definitions. Then, students will practice using C1 vocabulary words in a speaking and/or writing activity.

This lesson includes a free downloadable GoogleSlides presentation, printable speaking cards, and a writing activity.

Depending on the level of your class, this lesson can take one to two hours to teach. You can also use the speaking activity for one session and the writing activity for the following session.

Step 1: Download the FREE C1 Vocabulary Activities

Download the Google Slides presentation.

Download the PDF C1 Vocabulary speaking and writing activities.

Step 2: Prepare the speaking cards and writing sheets

Print the speaking activity cards. I recommend printing them with a darker color on the other side so that students cannot see through the cards. Cut up the cards, one set per pair or small group.

Print one writing sheet per student.

If you want to use this activity remotely, send the PDF to each student and have them print and cut the cards at home. Likewise, send each student one writing sheet.

Step 3: Present the Google Slides Presentation

Use the prompts on the slides to teach the class.

First, students will discuss some sets of words in pairs or small groups. Then, students will compare what they thought about the words with a definition for each one.

Depending on the level of your class, you might also want to put up some example sentences on the board at this time.

Next, repeat the process with another set of words.

Step 4: Do the speaking activity

Next, students rely on their skills of deduction and previous knowledge to have a conversation in small groups using C1 vocabulary. You may also want to let them use dictionaries.

Each student should draw 2 cards and reveal them to their partners. The students must then have a “natural” conversation, trying to use as many of their words as possible. It can be quite challenging and fun!

Monitor the students and offer feedback and assistance if needed.

You can keep the cards and reuse them for other activities as well.

Step 5: Do the C1 vocabulary writing activity

Finally, ask each student to write a paragraph in the style of a CAE writing prompt: email/letter, proposal, review, or report. Encourage them to use 4-5 of the C1 vocabulary words from the list at the top of the writing sheet.

Final thoughts

Students can often recognize many more words than they are comfortable using when speaking or writing. These activities give students an extra push to not only learn more C1 vocabulary words, but also use them in writing and speaking tasks.

If you try out this activity in your classroom, please leave a comment to let me know how it went. Happy teaching!
